Registration Process

Overview

Colorado State University maintains a policy to enable interested persons to form and join organizations to promote common interests. Student organizations form for specific educational, professional, social, recreational or other purposes which derive the majority of their membership and all of their leadership from the student body. The University recognizes student organizations in order to provide services, resources, and facilities; to effectively and equitably allocate University resources; and to assist in the coordination of activities. Organizations not recognized and registered each year are limited in their access to University services and resources.

Annual Registration Process

Every student organization must complete the registration process one time each academic year to be recognized by the University as an active student group on campus.  You can complete the registration steps in any order and in a time frame convenient for your club.

To ensure a smooth registration and no lapse in recognition from year to year, we recommend that you complete this process in the following order by September 30 each year

Step 1: Attend an Officer Orientation

SLiCE requires two officers to attend an officer orientation session (this does not apply to Sport Clubs who have their own Recreation Center orientation).

Additional officers, members, and advisor are welcome AND encouraged to attend an officer orientation!

Step 3: Maintain an Updated Constitution

Student Organizations registering for the first time need to submit a constitution to the SLiCE office for approval.  You can submit the form electronically when you complete the on-line registration form

A model constitution is available for reference.  Items listed in bold are CSU requirements for recognition and must be addressed in the organization's constitution.

For groups that are updating their registration, the constitution should be reviewed annually and updated as needed. If any changes are made, the updated constitution must be submitted to the SLiCE Office.  SLiCE will maintain a copy of each student organization's constitution.  You may request a copy of the current constitution on file for your review.  It's recommended that you submit an updated version of your constitution every 2-3 years by submitting it with your registration form or by emailing an electronic version to LSC_StudentOrgs@mail.colostate.edu

Minimum Standards for Recognition

Student organizations desiring official University recognition must meet the following minimum standards:

  1. Have a clearly stated lawful purpose, which must be part of a constitution.
  2. If affiliated with a national organization, must include a letter of affiliation with the constitution. The affiliate may not be a for-profit entity.
  3. Have a minimum of four Colorado State University student members
  4. The majority of the members must be Colorado State University students.
  5. Each organization must have an advisor who is a full-time or part-time Faculty, Administrative Professional or State Classified staff member. Graduate students will be allowed to serve as organizational advisors with consent from their academic advisor.
  6. Have an adequate and approved system of accounting for organizational funds.
  7. Comply with University policies and regulations pertaining to student organizations.

Eligibility Requirements to be an Officer

The basic requirements to be an officer in a registered student organization are as follows:

  1. Be a fee paying, fully matriculated student at Colorado State University.
  2. The student must maintain a cumulative GPA of a 2.25 or greater at the time of elections and while holding that office. If the student officer falls below a 2.25 GPA during their term of office, a one semester probationary period will be established before the student will be asked to step down from their position.

Recognition of organizations does not imply that the University supports or adheres to the views or positions taken by organizations. Responsibility for any action which violates federal, state or local laws, or University regulations, must be assumed by the individual groups and their officers and members.
